Fish fry in Lent

Why fish in Lent?

In the United States, Catholics aged 14 and older are asked to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and on the Fridays of Lent, and fish doesn't count as meat. That is the root of the Friday fish fry, and during Lent many church halls, Legion posts and VFW halls run fish fries of their own.

What this page lists

The places in our fish fry guide serve a regular fish fry, not a Lent-only one. Lent-only church and Legion fries aren't in it, because their dates change every year; check your parish bulletin or local post. Some Northwoods places are seasonal and may still be closed in late winter, so check before you go.

Fish fry not just on Friday

37 places in our guide list a fish fry on other days too. 31 of them list Wednesday; check whether they serve on Ash Wednesday itself.

Perch fish fries

151 places that list perch, often lake perch, among their fish.

Walleye fish fries

123 places that list walleye.

Bluegill fish fries

49 places that list bluegill, a freshwater panfish.
